You don’t have to save a lot, you just have to save a little for a long time.

“Guess what!”

I was sitting with my husband on the sofa after another pandemic Saturday. The kids were in bed, we’d cleaned up from dinner and we were taking a minute to relax before going to bed.

“What?”

“I bought new socks today.”

I know, right? In typical times, new socks would hardly warrant a mention, much less a conversation.

But when I explained that I haven’t bought any new socks since I was pregnant with our son, who is five, it was a little more interesting to talk about.

Jared commented, “You know, your old socks are why we bought a ski condo this winter.”

And there it is: despite how terrible everything has been over the last year, when we looked at our finances and how we wanted to spend our time, we discovered that somehow, we’d put ourselves in a position to buy a second home.

It’s nothing grand or fancy — just some bedrooms and a kitchen near a ski mountain we love. But it’s given us a launchpad for our winter adventures and it’s helped me see how simple, small spending habits can build wealth if you stick with them long enough.
